ASTM D6223D6223M-16
Designation D6223/D6223M 16Standard Specification forAtactic Polypropylene APP Modified Bituminous SheetMaterials Using a Combination of Polyester and Glass FiberReinforcements1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D6223/D6223M; the number immediately following the designation indicates theyear of original adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of lastreapproval. A superscript epsilon indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This specification covers prefabricated modified bitumi-nous sheet materials reinforced with a combination of polyesterfabric and glass fiber, with or without granules, that use atacticpolypropylene APP as the primary modifier and are intendedfor use in the fabrication of multiple ply roofing and water-proofing membranes.1.2 This specification is intended as a material specificationonly. Issues regarding the suitability of specific roof construc-tions or application techniques are beyond the scope of thisspecification.1.3 The specified tests and property limits used to charac-terize the sheet materials covered by this specification areintended to establish minimum properties. In-place roof systemdesign criteria such as fire resistance, field strength, impact/puncture resistance, material compatibility, uplift resistance, the need for field applied coatings, and others, are factorsbeyond the scope of this material specification.1.4 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated ineach system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of the other. Combiningvalues from the two systems may result in non-conancewith the standard.1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2. Classification4.1 Type I and II modified bituminous sheet materialsreinforced with a combination of polyester fabric and glassfiber reinforcements, are covered by this specification seeTable 1.4.2 The following grades are used to describe the materialsurfacing4.2.1 Grade GGranule surfacing.4.2.2 Grade SSmooth surfacing.5. Material and Manufacture5.1 In the process of manufacture, the reinforcement issaturated with APP modified asphalt and is impregnated andcoated on both sides with anAPP modified bituminous coating. The APP modified bituminous coating shall be permitted to becompounded with a mineral stabilizer.5.2 Grade G materials are surfaced on the weather side withmineral granules, except for any selvage. To prevent sticking inthe roll, the reverse side and any selvage shall be permitted tobe covered with a fine mineral surfacing or any other surfacingthat will not interfere with adhesion or bonding of the lapduring application.1This specification is under the jurisdication of ASTM Committee D08 onRoofing and Waterproofing and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D08.04on Felts, Fabrics and Bituminous Sheet Materials.Current edition approved Nov. 1, 2016. United States15.3 To prevent sticking in the roll, any selvage will besurfaced with mineral or other surfacing material which willnot interfere with adhesion or bonding during application.6. Physical Properties6.1 The sheet shall con to the minimum physicalproperties prescribed in Table 1.6.2 The finished product shall not crack or be so sticky as tocause tearing or other material damage upon being unrolled atany product temperature between 4 and 60C 40 and 140F.7. Dimensions, Mass, and Permissible Variations7.1 The finished product shall con to the followingdimensions and variations7.1.1 The width of the roll shall be as agreed upon betweenthe purchaser and the supplier and shall not vary more than1.7.1.2 The area of the roll shall be no less than as agreedupon between the purchaser and the supplier.7.1.3 The selvage width shall be within 6 mm 14 in. of thenominal selvage width and shall be not less than 76 mm 3 in.in width from the width edge of the sheet.7.2 The mass and thickness of the finished product shall beas prescribed in Table 2.8. Workmanship, Finish, and Appearance8.1 The finished product shall be completely coated in acontinuous, unbroken film and shall be free of such defects asholes, tears, cracks, wrinkles or permanent deations, blisters, ragged or untrue edges, and areas of uncoated rein-forcement.8.2 The surface of the weather side shall be uni infinish and texture.8.3 For Grade G products, mineral granules shall be uni-ly distributed over the entire surface of the sheet in aneven layer, excluding any selvage, and shall be firmly embed-ded in the APP modified bituminous coating. The line ofdemarcation between the granule surfaced portion of theweather side and any selvage shall be straight and parallel tothe edges of the sheet.8.4 When unrolled on a smooth plane, the sheet shall bestraight and true so that the selvage will mate with an adjacentsheet, within the tolerance for the lap without wrinkles, bucklesor fishmouths.9. Sampling and Test s9.1 Sample the material and determine the properties de-scribed in this specification in accordance with Test sD5147/D5147M unless otherwise indicated.9.2 Ultimate ElongationSee Test s D5147/D5147M, Section 6.9.3 High Temperature StabilitySample the material anddetermine the high temperature stability in accordance withTest s D5147/D5147M, Section 15, and as describedherein. Report the highest test temperature at which flowing, dripping, or drop ation does not occur. Materials may betested in 5.5C 10F increments.9.4 Low Temperature UnrollingSample the material anddetermine the low temperature unrolling in accordance withTest s D5636/D5636M, and as described herein. Reportthe lowest test temperature at which none of the specimensshow cracking or surface rupture. The temperature, at or belowwhich the product must pass is stated in Table 1.TABLE 1 Physical Properties of APP Modified Bituminous SheetMaterials Using a Combination of Polyester and Glass FiberReinforcementsAProperty Type I Type IIPeak load at 23 2C 73.4 3.6FMD and XMD, before and after heatconditioning, min, kN/m lbf/in. 11.4 65 17.5 100Elongation at 23 2C 73.4 3.6FMD and XMD, before and after heatconditioning, at peak load, min, 3 3Peak load at 18 2C 0 3.6FMD and XMD, min, kN/m lbf/in. 26.3 150 35 200Elongation at 18 2C 0 3.6FMD and XMD, at peak load, min, 3 3Tear Strength at 23 2C73.4 3.6F, min, N lbf 533 120 800 180Low temperature flexibility, before and after heatconditioning, max, C F 0 32 0 32Dimensional stability, max, 1 1Compound stability, min, C F 110 230 110 230Granule embedment, Grade G only, max, grams 2 2Water absorption, max, 3.2 3.2Moisture content, max, 1 1Low temperature unrolling, max, C F 5 41 5 41AThe properties in this table are “as manufactured” unless otherwise noted.TABLE 2 Dimensions and Mass of APP Modified BituminousSheet Materials Using a Combination of Polyester and GlassFiber ReinforcementsAProperty Type I Type IIThickness, min, mm mils,Grade S 3.5 140 3.5 140Grade G 4.0 160 4.0 160Net mass per unit area, min., g/m2lbs 100 ft2Grade S 3662 75 3662 75Grade G 4394 90 4394 90Bottom side coatingthickness, min, mm mils,Grade S 1 40 1 40Grade G 1 40 1 40AThe properties in this table are “as manufactured” unless otherwise noted.D6223/D6223M 16210.
